Woodcut is a relief method where the design is cut with the grain of the wood with a knife or V-shaped gouge. Chisels and gouges are used to remove large areas of background. Ink is then applied to the raised areas. It is considered the oldest method of printing. Woodblock is the term used most often for Japanese prints and the prints of Arts and Crafts printmakers. Soft wood, cut lengthwise along the grain is used. It is also known as Block Print.
