Copper engraving, copper-plate engraving, steel engraving and line engraving are all terms used to describe printed engravings. The earliest metal plates used were copper. Being a soft metal, a copper plate could only be used several hundred times before the image would deteriorate. The plate would then have to be reworked or discarded. Copper plate engraving was preferred by artists because it was easier to engrave than steel and allowed for richer and warmer effects. |
