Howard Pyle (1853-1911) has been called "Father of American Illustration." He was also a great teacher inspiring a generation illustration artists including, Harvey Dunn, N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott and Jessie Willcox Smith. Pyle was a prolific author of books and short stories. His well known illustrations of pirates are credited with creating the modern image of pirate dress.
